If this past Sunday night is anything to go by then I'd say St Clair has stepped it up another notch in the hospo game. There was a real buzz about the 9012 as the sun started to dip behind the hills. People were everywhere – pouring into the restaurants, wandering around eating gelato, relaxing in the wine bar and ferrying takeaways to enjoy on the beach and steps.
It looked like a warm summer's night, but it was anything but warm – instead it had the energy of an aprés ski town. There wasn't a breath of wind, which helped. And the low winter sun cast a pinkish warm hue across the beach and the houses sprinkled over the hills. A strange dusk sea fog found its way into the beach – further softening the light and giving the many beach walkers a dramatic misty experience.
I meandered around enjoying the vibe and picked off a few photos of some of the newer buildings that have emerged in St Clair in recent years – and some older classics. It's changed so much since I first visited in the late 1990s and I feel like it has become infinitely more iconic and attractive to visit. That's mostly down to the business operators and developers who have taken (at times) huge risks to improve the area with their visions.
I feel pride in my backyard beach suburb – it has become a precinct that rivals some of the best surf suburbs in the world.
