July 22nd 2025: Superbanks and random slabs

A week of east swell has delivered a surprising little bounty into St Clair beach this past week. Yes, we have a superbank. It's when a heap of sand piles up in the perfect spot on the beach to turn any swell into running waves. 

For the local surfers this superbank has replaced the relatively soft and harmless waves of St Clair and created an impressive playground with some moments of madness – in the form of long barrels that dredge right up as the swell hits the bank. There have even been fun little roll-in peaks to get you started before the water churns with sand and grinds its way toward the South Coast Boardriders Clubhouse. St Clair has become a right hander for now – the die hard locals are still lamenting the demise of Channel Lefts.

The east swell has turned so many spots on – spreading the crowds right out. We found a random little slabbing left with just a few out. There were some crazy waves and lucky escapes from the shallow reef below. Keo and his mate Flint managed to scrape into a few good ones – they were exceptionally hard to surf – even Jeff Patton had resorted to his boogie board. Strangely, Jim Tyson, who had been out of the water for 18 months decided this would be a good spot to get back in the swing of things. And he got some great rides. 

With all these east swells it certainly doesn't feel much like winter. And this week is more of the same: more east swell and light, mostly offshore, winds all round. Get into it.
