My work this past week took me to the big smoke of Wellington. The big swell that hit us in the south last week was way more manageable up there and turned the city into a kind of surfing dreamscape. There are lots of breaks on the south-facing bays and beaches – plenty that don't get surfed either. The surf focus in Wellington is all around Lyall Bay. Everyone wants to have a crack at a peak that stands up just off the wall alongside the airport. I saw plenty of waves with four people on them – and many of them can barely surf, making it not only one of the most crowded spots, but probably one of the most dangerous, too.
My university mate Raj rips in the surf, but had a long period in his more recent life of not surfing. That always surprised me because he was so good at surfing. He came for a surf at Lyall Bay this past week and it is fair to say he's straight back to where he left off. I'm pretty happy about that because he is coming to the Mentawais with a group of us to celebrate turning 50 in May. We've been mates for more than 30 years now ... that alone is quite a cool thing to wrap your head around.
Raj showed me around his city, too. What a cool place it is. It's a true melting pot of cultures with people from all walks of life thriving together. There's a very good energy about the place and the people who live there. I was also surprised at how easy it is to get around the city. Once you learn the shortcuts it is surprisingly simple.
I didn't get a window to head to the Wairarapa on this trip, but from a surf perspective, that is the jewel in the crown. Maybe next time ...
