We've had a few summer storms lining up and they are often some of the best – bringing nice clean ground swells and often lighter, more favourable winds for the south coast. This past one this week was a doozy. The winds were so intense it really made me think carefully about my hope of sailing around New Zealand one day.
At one point I stared out into the South Pacific Ocean and wondered how a little yacht might survive such a complicated and unrelenting sea state. For as far as I could see, white rollers were crumbling at the head of the swell – a tessellated minefield for inexperienced dreamers.
Luckily it brought with it a few days of great waves, some of which formed the canvas for the 2024 Otago Champs. That event was held at St Clair in great waves and even better air temperatures – the ice cream vendors were in high demand. Nothing quite compares to those few days each year when Dunedin feels like a tropical paradise.
