December 26th 2023: Meri Kirihimete

I may be a day late, but hopefully, the Christmas glow hasn't settled yet. This week's images come from my most recent trip around the East Cape along State Highway 35, mixed in with some local goodness. The perfect chill-out, kickback holiday inspiration as you all head out into summer holidays – for those of you reading this in the Southern Hemisphere at least.

Now into our 13th year of Box of Light production, we couldn't do any of this without our partners and regular advertisers. They help to ensure Box of Light stays free for subscribers. We are eternally grateful for that.

So, the next time you're trying to decide which beer to have, make it an Emerson's. And the food at their Taproom and Restaurant in Dunedin is out of this world. I can recommend the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotted Hen – one of the best-tasting burgers I have ever had (I had it twice in one week).

Our mates at Dive Otago have also partnered with us this year and we couldn't be more stoked to have them alongside. Dive Otago is the OG in the diver training world. They offer courses for all levels and have an indoor dive pool to train in before you head out into the kelp forests and crystal clear bays around Dunedin.

We've also had Photo Toolbox along with us since the early days. They specialise in software that helps professional photographers and their clients manage licensing. We have a heap of photographers on our subscription list.

Two of our biggest advertisers are Backdoor Surf, which recently opened a new store in Dunedin (where Kathmandu used to be) and Rachael Morrison Jewellery – yes, we're related but her work is next-level amazing. Check it out here.

Backdoor has just released the new G-Skate surfboard from Channel Islands ... this board is causing quite a stir among pros and people like me (who have the mental aptitude of a pro, but not the skill).

Without these awesome companies and people, Box of Light would not have lasted 13 years. Show them some love and say thanks from us.

See you next year ... Derek

PS As you have probably figured out, we also make New Zealand Surf Journal, which now reaches more than 21,000 surfers in New Zealand. It's a paid subscription model – just $4 month to get full access and to support our mahi, and we just released a free New Zealand Surf Journal subscription level, too.
