The good old ball of flames has slowly worked its way south to the point that we can now surf until 9:30pm. That, combined with the early starts (sunrise was at 5:58am today) makes for some long days in the surf. Lyndon, who lives a stone's throw from Channel Lefts at St Clair, had surfed three times before midday on Saturday.
So it was fair enough that he didn't surf the 7pm session with a gaggle of excited groms who had lucked upon one of those small but magic evening surfs to close out the weekend. And it was cool to see some new faces in the lineup with the next wave of girl groms getting stuck into the peak.
Sessions like this one, as random and impromptu as it was, are the ones the kids remember for a long time. They also start to seed the surf addiction for those who are new to the fun of a summer-esque peak like this. The vibe was good – the hustle on the quiet side – the antics turned up instead with party waves and board swaps and a lot of hooting and laughter.
It was a good way to honour a weekend that truly felt like summer. Here's to more of that.
See you at the beach ... Derek
