October 24th 2023: Sacred ground

This time of year a trip to the Catlins seems therapeutic, like a journey to some sacred ground that fills you with the energy you need to get to the end of the year. We headed down ... once we were quite sure the All Blacks had dispatched the Argentinians, drawn as if by a magnet.

The swell didn't quite line up as the forecast had suggested but some days it doesn't matter there. There are always a few corners to keep everyone happy and we certainly found some of those. But the adventure of a trip to the Catlins is more than just about the waves. It is also about the quality of your campfire, the food you eat around that campfire and the stories you tell through the flames. It's about the simple and most basic needs. It's about being in a landscape that reminds you how insignificant you are in the face of nature.

It's a reset of sorts. It recalibrates us, our goals and aspirations and that has got to be a good thing.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS Hopefully a few of you captured my chat with Hannah and Damian from The Breeze last week. They invited me for a coffee at Long Dog last week to celebrate the new ownership of the cafe and life in St Clair in general. It was a stunning morning – the pool was steaming as swimmers did laps in the lanes and a small swell rounded the point. It was one of those warm magic mornings where you pinch yourself to see if it might be a dream. Adding Hannah and Damian into that mix is pretty cool. They so truly and genuinely love Dunedin, and we can all learn something from their stream of positivity. Just awesome.
