It seems like only yesterday that I was heading off to university and into the unknown of Massey University in Palmerston North. This week, more than 30 years later, I toured Otago University with my eldest, Taya. I loved my time at Massey and I know that Taya will love her time at Otago ... the campus is absolutely beautiful and everyone we met had an air of positivity. The campus was swarming with friendly students and university staff focused on possibilities and opportunities.
These university years are pretty special for most. It's that leaping off point between school and your actual future. It is the moment you leave the comforts of your family and discover your independence and your true self. And you're in that transition with 20,000 others going through exactly the same thing.
I'm still in contact almost daily with the people I met through that period. Friendships forged for life and some of the most amazing humans I have ever met. I ended up swerving off my path to become a vet after two years of intensive science. A friend loaned me her camera and the rest is history. If it hadn't been for those years at Massey then I may not have ever found my passion. And that's what was really cool with the introductions we had to potential paths for Taya. The focus is on studying what you like and doing what spins your wheels.
In my book, that's a good beginning to any journey.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS It may have felt like summer all weekend, but there is an absolute heap of weather brewing through the roaring 40s right now. That includes a heap of swell that's probably already made landfall on our coast by the time you're reading this. Here's the latest forecast ... be safe out there.
