It was there for sure, I just couldn't see it. 30cm of the most amazing powder snow you could hope to find in New Zealand. This was the straight down stuff that puts an even coat across entire mountains and drives snowboarders and skiers crazy. It was all over the Saddle Basin at Treble Cone. Completely accessible by lift, yet never so far away for me ... and not just because of the avalanche risk, which closed the Powder Bowl along with a few other aspects.
The thick fog hung in the air like vertigo-inducing pea soup. It shrouded the powder and made any type of run near impossible. Only those with an intimate knowledge of the gullies and folds above Saddle Basin could indulge. And even then the runs were blind. Treble Cone is a jewel in a star-studded cast of fields in New Zealand because when you score a powder day there you never forget it.
We were so close yesterday, but ultimately thwarted by the persistent lack of visibility.
We'll be back – that's for certain. We've been close enough to know what we've been missing.
Back to the beach for us this week and back to your normal programming ...
See you at the beach ... Derek
