Okay, so these past few weeks have been bitterly cold, wet and gloomy. The only silver lining to such a dreary winter so far is the sushine of this past weekend. I hope you got out amongst it because this week is back to the grey tones of a particularly bleak Dunedin winter.
I'm determined to not wear booties this winter. I had the same idea about a hood but I buckled after a session of ice cream headaches that felt like my head was about to split open. Just one more duck dive and I'm sure it would have popped. Going sans booties can be quite hard too, although the added advantage is that your feet become so numb that you can't feel them being blugeoned against all the new rocks that have appeared at St Clair. I swear I could stand on a shard of glass and be none the wiser.
Still, I prefer to be able to feel my feet rather than wear booties that take an edge of the surfing experience itself ... at least until someone designs and makes a decent surf bootie at least. I think my Red Bands would have more dexterity than the current offerings.
The other bleak thing that has happened this winter is that the crowds are still as frothy as they are in summer. I did manage to find a few empty spots for today's report, but some of the old classics have been full rush hour on the sweetspots of the tide.
Here's hoping the coming weeks bring a little more sunshine for us all.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS Some friends are holding a special Moving Towards Wholeness event at Petridish on Wednesday, August 3, 2022 from 6:30-8:30pm. It's a healing, awakening, spiritual event designed to help you lead a better, healthier life and, my favourite bit, acces "the reptilian part of your brain". That sounds so good. All the info and details right here.
