June 14th 2022: Civil

I don't stay up until 3:30am much these days. But that's what time I hit the wall at the Jamie Civil tribute music event, A Knight To Remember, on Sunday morning. While Jamie had a huge network of surfers throughout the country who knew and loved him, he also had the same type of impact in the music world. He was a talented DJ in his own right. His sister Tash told me once he preferred to play music because he was so shy and DJing meant he wouldn't have to talk to anyone.

So, on Saturday night Jamie's good friend Leon Eru and a cast of many musicians and sound gurus from throughout the country, joined together and created an event that was fuelled completely in honour of Jamie, his family and friends. Strawberry Sound sorted out the sound system – one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere I believe. Patti's and Cream dished out ice cream for free ... and believe me, even with temps in the 1 or 2°C they were as popular as ever, and The Hungry Tui kept people well-nourished.

The night was one of those occasions that you could never repeat. It had moments of sorrow, happiness and elation all woven into impassioned musical performances. Tash's own band Salty Brine was a highlight for most – just inspired music and a real heartfelt performance from the entire band. The weird thing for me was that I have known Tash for many years and worked with her on a few projects and I had no idea she was such an incredible musician and singer. That Civil family are a super talented bunch!

Local surfers, turned music giants, Jake Barton and Julian Temple, both played outstanding sets before the Dudztown crew stepped in to kick off the DJ lineup.

The event was a treat from beginning to end – a fitting honour for an amazing human who would have been overwhelmed by the outpouring, but also completely stoked to see the worlds he loved coming together like that.

Love and respect to Leon, the families, all the musicians, and everyone involved in making this great tribute happen.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS We have another lens for sale as we move across to Canon's RF lenses – this time it's our Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS Mark II. This lens has been a favourite of mine for lineups and is a real solid performer that goes in my kit everyday. It cost me about $3150, but selling it for $2000 with free shipping nationwide.
