I love the widely adopted perception that I travel all the time and live the carefree life of a free spirit, but there is a Ying to the Yang. There always is. For me, the reality is that I mostly feed my family by shooting and filming for a bunch of commercial clients. They range from health care and construction to primary industries. I really enjoy the work and the people I get to work with. I'm very lucky in that I've been able to handpick my clients. I get to work with some amazing companies and a bunch of very inspiring people.
The only downside is that with a week like this just gone, I've been unable to spend much time at the beach. That's why this report is filled with images from Kaikoura and some older favourites shot at dusk.
The good news is that I've been able to learn about the ultimate in game day nutrition, got to watch in awe as a Tigercat took a fully grown pine tree and prepared it for the building industry, and witnessed Mosese Dawai pile on some confidence in a waning Highlanders side against Moana Pasifika.
So the Yang really isn't so bad. Just a necessary, complementary and connected force to the way I live my life.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS We've just posted up a special 40 Frames feature from that special Kaikoura swell. You can see that right here on NZ Surf Journal. Also, if you haven't already then book in for my sessions at Wild Dunedin, The New Zealand Festival of Nature that runs from 22-28th April, 2022.
