We have this running joke when we go camping ... we tell the kids there is a rave party happening and they lose it trying to find the location around these large arena camping areas that we like to visit. Of course, there is no rave, but the kids spend a lot of time looking for one.
Well this past week we bookended our 25-day journey on the West Coast with a stay at one of our favourite little enclaves, Fox River. We told the kids there was a rave party on and, much to our surprise, they actually found one.
Sure enough the sleepy little surfing and river community soon gave way to the beats of a pretty awesome DJ. Streams of people arrived and they sat somewhere on the spectrum between hippy and hipster – an incredibly awesome bunch of very happy young people. They were dressed up as foxes, disco infernos, dresses of light bulbs and handmade hats encircled with fairy lights. Each person unique and stoking on the environment as well as the tunes and good vibes.
We danced and laughed late into the warm night air. It was a fitting end to our time on the West Coast where we had waves every day and only one day of drizzle amid the sweltering temperatures. The West Coast had dazzled us from start to finish with its stunningly beautiful places, friendly people and great vibes around every corner.
Can't wait to get back there.
See you at the beach ... Derek
