January 25th 2022: Drifting

Drifting is something I actually don't get to do that often anymore – just going where the winds and swell tell me to go. But this past week we've been in recovery mode from the NZ Surf Nationals ... with not one single obligation to guide our movements over here on the West Coast. That is something of a special thing.

We've teamed up with the Gabbott family from Taieri Mouth who share our mindset. Apart from a quick jaunt to Kaikoura, to chase an east swell that never fully eventuated in the south, we've been based on the West Coast. The more time I spend here the more I realise how beautiful this place is. And the pace is incredible – especially with nothing to weigh on your mind. We've surfed, fished and rock jumped off anything we could find for the entire week and camped in some of the most beautiful camping spots I have ever seen. From Greymouth to Karamea this coastline is like New Zealand of yesteryear – relaxed, happy, friendly people and good vibes at the end of each dusty road.

One of the highlights was during our stay at Fox River when we met Remi's actual brother. The two kelpies instantly had a bond and we soon realised they were from the same the litter. Pretty incredible really. Percy's owner has a beautiful bach overlooking a remote nikau-clad beach – the type of destination you dream of.

For us though camping in the sand, gathering driftwood for our fires and finding shelter from our 20th day of blazing sunshine fills our days. That's how we like it. We'll do our best to savour the rest of this trip ... just drifting.

See you at the beach ... Derek
