See you later 2021! What a year that was. I'm quite happy to welcome in 2022 and I hope we find a way back to normality ... or at least a new normal that includes more travel, no lockdowns and less division.
We had grand plans for this summer break: a roadtrip around the South Island and two weeks up in the North Island. Now we're faced with the looming threat of Omicron an anticipated explosion of Covid cases ... and a lot of unknowns that come with it. So our best laid plans have had to become flexi. We're poised to shoot here or there at a moment's notice depending on conditions.
In reality we've been in traning for this for years – that's exactly how surfing works. "We may go to your barbecue, but if there are waves we won't make it."
So instead for us we'll be chasing swell and weather in an erratic path throughout the country until we're forced back to base. With any luck, by the time you're reading this, I'll smell like a smoky campfire and either be paddling into some seriously hollow waves, or diving for lunch with my kids on a remote reef in the Catlins.
Have a great break and we'll see you in the '22.
See you at the beach ... Derek
