December 21st 2021: Kinesis

I knew when I saw it that we had created something special. My printer, Murray, knows his craft and it was his idea to go frameless on an image of a breaking wave that I call Kinesis. It's the scale that gets you. At 2.4m wide by 1.1m tall the image leaps from the wall, a seemingly endless vision of motion and wave energy. From a long way back it looks surreal, but the bit I love most of all is that the closer you get to it the more detail emerges from the cotton rag art paper.

I've even had a few customers swear that it was actually a painting. They could see the brush strokes. I take that as a huge compliment. That detail, and that feeling, is what I was trying to capture in the wave's surface and the textures as the water moves in different directions. The master strokes of nature.

We'll produce just 10 of these (and 1 artist proof). But this is a statement piece and it will need a big wall to hang on. A grand living room in a clean new build, or a designer office space perhaps. You can add Kinesis to your wishlist here. Either way I am quite certain that Kinesis is my new favourite piece.

Enjoy your run into Xmas, stay calm, stay connected and be foolish.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS The gallery is open most of this week for those of you keen to see Kinesis in real life, or just to pick up one of our latest surf books (I can even sign it for you), or check out one of our pre-mounted prints (they make the ideal gifts and start from just $49). We also have a handful of 1m x 1m statement pieces framed beautifully and ready to go. Call to make an appointment on 021 139 8188, or call in at 8 Castle Street, Dunedin.
