I love this time of year, but what a spanner daylight savings is. Okay, don't get me wrong – I love the late evening surfs and extraordinary summer evenings that glow on and on. That stuff is pretty cool ... but we'd just got into a rhythm of early morning surfs when suddenly we are cast back into darkness again. It has completely ruined the before school surfs. At least for a few weeks – until the sun catches up again.
The other part that trips me up is the complete state of confusion I get in trying to work out whether the clocks go forward or back. That should be so simple, but it ties my mind into a knot that has no beginning and no end. My brain hurts just thinking about it. I've never worn a watch.
I've never been able to work out how to adjust the clock in my car so each winter I'm as prompt as you could imagine, but through summer I'm nearly always an hour late. I can just imagine how frustrating I must be at times. I apologise for that.
It does occur to me that we'd be better off to move away from time in order to keep societal order. Maybe we should adopt more of a seasonal approach – long days in summer and semi-hibernation in winter. That might help us to align a little closer to the beating heart of the earth. It certainly would suit my natural inclinations better.
Either way, here's a collection of images from last week – taken from my two favourite ends of each day.
See you at the beach ... Derek
