August 24th 2021: Lockdown Love

And so we enter that strange realm of lockdown for another time. I quite like some aspects of lockdown – like how stoked my dog is all the time. How my kids learn new and unexpected skills, like mastering the Rubix cube, playing badminton and cooking whatever they can think of.

But there are some very serious downsides. No surfing at Level 4. Yes, illegal. Who'd have ever thoguht that would happen in New Zealand? It pains me, but I can see sense in it all. We're so lucky to live in a country with the ability to pull a team of five million together on this with very little fuss. It actually feels like we're on task to show Delta the exit. Let's hope so.

As an acknowledgement of everyone's sacrifice under Level 4 we've decided to offer our Box of Light readers a special rate on our annual subscription over at New Zealand Surf Journal. Instead of $48/year, we're shaving 25% off our annual sub and offering a full access, full year's subscription for just $36.

There is a catch of course. You have until the whole of New Zealand moves out of Level 4 to claim the special Lockdown Love pricing.

To tease you, here are our top five stories from a deep dive into New Zealand Surf Journal's feature well:

5) Searching for waves in the Sub-Antarctic Islands beneath New Zealand. Yes, we went there. Heard stories of massive sharks, horrific shark attacks and weather so wild you couldn't stand up. This is why we want to go back.

4) Chasing giant swells through the Catlins and every now and again finding them in moments of perfection.

3) Meeting incredible people who act on their life-changing experiences. Like these surfing doctors.

2) Surfing with artists who use their work to change the way people think, act and express themselves. Like this sand artist Ian Ross. And Daniel Kereopa's brother, surfboard sculptor Aaron Kereopa.

1) Logan Murray is one of the very greats of New Zealand surf photography. His pursuit of perfection has shaped him way more than any one will ever realise. In this personal account, Logan takes us through what is involved in capturing the perfect lineup image. It's way more intense than you might first think.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS Seriously, Lockdown Love is available until we all move out of Level 4. Time for some enlightneing stories, honest reviews and heartland surf journalism. Get your Lockdown Love here. Stay safe. Be kind out there.
