July 20th 2021: Rainy days

Rainy winter days can be pretty miserable in Dunedin ... unless you're a duck ... or a surfer. These giant slow-moving clouds that have been drenching the city in light, misty rain this past week harbour a silver lining for surfers – the promise of light winds. Add in a north east swell and we're talking the equivalent of a powder day in the mountains. Actually, I have it on good authority there were a few of those this week also ...

On the coast we've had some visits from some VIPs in the surfing world this past week with Mount Maunganui's Luke Griffin and national women's champ and Gisborne star Saffi Vette in town. Both have reported how welcoming the locals are and how outrageously awesome OUSA's ReOrientation parties have been ... and both have developed a renewed dislike for the extreme cold and excessive rubber.

This week, thanks to our partner Emerson's, the good people at Strictly Coffee and the Recovery Room, and Dunedin NZ we'll be filming with one of New Zealand's most successful surfers, Paige Hareb. She's decided that a visit to Dunedin in the middle of winter is a good idea ... okay, we may have lured her with images of world-class waves and the promise of very good beer and coffee. While she's here Paige is spending some time with the Queen's Surf Academy girls, Otago University's Physed Department ... and plenty of time in the brine.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS Ever wondered what Team New Zealand has to go through while campaigning the ISA World Surfing Championships in El Salvador during a Covid-19 pandemic? We did. So, Saffi Vette documented their journey and put together this cool film.
