June 22nd 2021: Itchy feet

While the excitement of exploring our own backyard will probably never wear off, I do miss those adventures into the unknown – to places where the language is new and every little task becomes significantly more difficult as a result. There's something about travel into the unknown that is intriguing and also a little bit frightening.

Whenever I travel to a new city I love to take my camera and go exploring on foot whenever my actual work is complete. I just go walkabout ... walk off and get lost. Everything I see is new, fresh, exciting and I really get a buzz from it. I even do it back home here when working in our big cities. Maybe it's the farm boy in me, but the city lifestyles of the world really blow me away. And they each have a culture that is unique to them. Like Singapore's vibrant evening dining culture – which is kind of like a giant community gathering each night, or Japan's winter ice and temple festivals, or even Brisbane's charming South Bank culture. They're all about people coming together – on a grand scale and to dazzling backdrops borne from the minds of talented city leaders, artists and visionaries.

Sadly, until this Covid-19 wrinkle irons out at least, we're probably not going to get that chance for a while. So, instead of an edition full of rainy images and waves that just aren't hitting the banks the way we've come to expect, here's some of the images that I've captured on my "walkabouts".

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS We often get asked how our readers can find our older images and it's actually very simple. Just dive into the Box of Light website and enter a keyword in the "Search for photos..." box and ... voila! Your images should appear. You can search for names, places even "snow", or "rain", or "lineup". Have fun ...
