I love a good roadie, and these past few have been so good I have been feeling a bit guilty about leaving my family behind. Taking them all would be tricky and they'd get bored during some of the long work hours, but it always seems a shame that my kids miss out on some pretty incredible experiences that are full of learning opportunity.
I'm deep into putting my next book together and it focuses on people who have an insatiable passion for our coastline – these people are living the dream. We've been fortunate to meet people and families from all walks of life and points of perspective. A full gamut of the Kiwi coastal lifestyle has been represented and so many intriguing stories along the way.
So, I managed to arrange some school work for my youngest Keo, who is 11, to take on the road for my current trip. We're part way through a tour of Taranaki, Raglan, Coromandel, Mount Maunganui, Gisborne and Mahia. Months and months of planning has put us in front of some exceptional people and we've heard their stories and photographed their interactions with the ocean and sea that helps them thrive.
Keo's had a chance to study or surf waves like Stent Road, Oakura, Frustrations, Weld Road, Manu Bay, Indies (at 3-4 with the odd 18-second period 6-foot steam roller set to keep him on his toes), to playful Pauanui peaks and some wonky Mount beachies.
While doing these stories life can get very hectic on the road. Minimal sleep, long days and lots of driving, but Keo's been lapping it up. As long as there is some surf, swim or kayak weaved into each day then he's happy.
