Longer days and more sunshine hours are so good for us all. I don't mind a deep cold winter with plenty of snow and swarms of southern ocean swells, but these lack-lustre winters are so dreary. If it wasn't for the amount of unseasonal north swells we were gifted this year then we'd have gone stir-crazy.
The seasons seem to be completely corrupted these days and for me that's cause for alarm. Sadly, as a global society we seem to have our wagon hitched to everything other than the natural world. That's the world that has sustained life for so many 100,000s of years on this planet.
The World Wide Fund for Nature released a report last week: The Living Planet Report 2020. It reveals some alarming facts about the human impact on life on earth. According to the report the population sizes of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles have seen an average drop of 68 percent since 1970. That's just 50 years – putting that into the timeline of life on earth it's something of a very sudden cataclysmic event. We're living right now in the collapse of the natural world. And we're blissfully unaware. More focused on profits than the ecosystem that has supported life on earth. That's actually quite scary.
Marco Lambertini is the director general of WWF International. He summed up the report very clearly.
“The Living Planet Report 2020 underlines how humanity’s increasing destruction of nature is having catastrophic impacts not only on wildlife populations, but also on human health and all aspects of our lives."
Heavy, I agree, but worth bringing our heads out of the sand for.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS If that is alarming (and disturbing) to you then don't look at this real time world human population clock. On the day you read this there will be approximately 150,000 babies born. In that same 24-hour period there will be appoximately 63,000 deaths. Yep, that's a population growth today only of 87,000 humans. Scary stuff ...
