Hello summer!
It felt a lot like summer this past week and not just because of the warm nights, sunburnt faces and cracked lips. The small waves, straight swells and dubious banks brought back that familiar summer search feeling. You know the one: maybe it's better over the hill, up the coast, down the coast, down the dune or at the end of the peninsula. A frantic search for something just a little better than what we have right under our nose.
Just like summer, a few hours of driving and a lot of debate on messages later and we all converge back at ground zero: St Clair. The waves are okay – a 3 out of 10. But it would be an 8 out of 10 if you lived in Mount Maunganui.
Then it's a feast of small wonky waves as the warm summer air blends into the 9:30pm dusk. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.
Next week, we're heading North again – Coro coast and then Mount Maunganui this time. Roll on that summer feeling ...
See you at the beach ... Derek
