Rain and clouds. That's what this past week has felt like and while it has been great for productivity at the Box of Light HQ, it's not much chop to point the camera at. And a lack of surf is no good for anyone's mental health.
I thought I had seen a window or two, but they got shut tight by the relentless easterly airflow, which did deliver a lot of sand back to the beaches and banks, but turned the lineups into pea soup.
There were some desperados paddling out into the teeth of it all, but I resisted joining them ... I had Sunday arvo pegged as the best shot at a half-decent wave. So, exercising extreme patience, I waited. By the time the lineup cleaned up enough to have some semblance of order, every surfer in Dunedin was descending on the same spot.
We don't often get crowds, but I did see one wave with five surfers taking off on it. Crazy stuff. The stuff of desperation.
Thankfully, this week is looking much, much better in the wave department. Time to plan that sickie ...
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS We got to spend some time with the team at Seventhwave Wetsuits recently. They're New Zealand's only surviving surf wetsuit manufacturer and they're based just up the road in Christchurch. Their philosophy on sustainable production and their approach to innovation is inspiring. You can read the full Seventhwave Wetsuits story right here on NZ Surf Journal.
