I haven't been swimming for what seems like a very long time. An ankle injury and a hectic winter have conspired against me, but this past Sunday, in a post Fleetwood Mac and All Blacks winning glow, I managed to get a few hours swimming around a beautifully entertaining line-up.
A shallow bank kept producing some small heavy barrels – a tad too fast to surf, but plenty of fun to get inside to share that view with you. In the corner a gathering of surfers feasted on small rifling lefts as the wind backed right off and the late afternoon light shone across a lazy summer-like session. Pockets of people perched along the cliff edge taking it all in. If the water hadn't been an ice-cream headache inducing 11°C you could have sworn it was summer.
A couple of windy days to come this week. Brace yourselves.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS This Saturday is the Port Chalmers Seafood Festival (congrats to the winners of our Facebook competition!). Be sure to check out The Artisan Village and indulge in some culinary seafood magic. There'll be some nice beers to wash it all down, too ... our tip: Emerson's Orange Roughy. So good. Deep sea brew at its very best. Tickets here.
