Snow fomo. I have it and this past weekend was excruciating. I seem to have passed my obsession on to the kids and even the dog gets a strange look on his face when the mercury plummets and the southerly systems loom large on the horizon. But this weekend was all promise and no delivery ... for Dunedin at least.
Okay, we awoke to a 2cm coating on Monday morning, but that was tracked out in our backyard within a few minutes thanks to a stampede of kids, an overexcited dog and three terribly crafted, but extraordinarily tall snowmen.
When we moved to Dunedin more than 10 years ago one of the real highlights was the snowy winters. In the first few we actually got to ski down the road, with our toddlers, all the way to their Grandma's house for breakfast. But not this year ... or the past few. Snow days, when all the schools shut up shop for the day because of snowfall, are as rare as hen's teeth. Monday wasn't one, much to the disappointment of every member of my household.
But we won't give up hope on the 2019 winter just yet. There is a Vincent Van Gogh of a rain radar over New Zealand for the next two weeks and every chance there's a snow day hiding in there somewhere.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS We're about to embark on a new project that will explore New Zealand's most lifestyle-rich beach, river and lakeside abodes ... and the people who thrive in them. Do you know a family or group of characters who live or regularly visit such a space? We'd love to hear from you. You can send us an email right here.
