June 4th 2019: Chasing shadows

This past week I feel like I have been chasing shadows. As much as I love the idea of being out chasing the dream day in and day out, the reality is I get a lot of weeks like last week. During these, just coming up for air is a good thing, but doesn't stretch as far as a surf unfortunately. The limited daylight hours don't help.

I'm sure I'm not the only one in that predicament as we head toward the shortest day of the year. In fairness, this week there wasn't a lot of good wind and swell combos on offer – so it was probably a good week to be locked at the desk.

A southerly flick is always welcome, but there are a few banks around right now that I really don't want to see destroyed. It feels strange to be at the start of winter, have very little snow around and the summer banks still in play. The ski fields are hanging for a decent dump and they desperately need it.

Let's hope the weather forecast for the end of this week delivers it promised payload of snow ... it certainly brings a heap of swell (Shippies would be my pick).

Right that's me for now, back to my marathon editing session ...

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS I got a call from Glenn Sutton on Friday – he was heading up to Aramoana for a training run and to add a little extra difficulty to it all he was wearing a gazillion puffer jackets, leg warmers and a woolly hat. Yes, it was a cold day, but he was heat training ahead of his July journey to run 217km non-stop through Death Valley. I'm really proud to be a part of his adventure. He's an absolute inspiration. There are a heap of local businesses jumping in behind him with Emerson's even brewing a beer in his honour. Into The Valley is a gose-style low-alcohol brew and about as close to an electrolyte as you could get with a beer: sweet and salty. We'll have more info next week on how you can get your hands on some and support Glenn's efforts in California at the same time. Perfect.
