September 11th 2018: Seven

We're seven! I'm not sure where that time went, but seven years ago we sent out the very first edition of Box of Light. It wasn't great, but it started the journey and for that we're proud. And in all that time we haven't missed a deadline – we've come close with technical issues keeping me up all night to solve on ocassion. And there was the one time I preset an edition to send and clean forgot about daylight savings. By 10:35am that Tuesday I had about a dozen emails asking me where it was. I was able to bring the send forward on my phone while on a job I was working on in the North Island. That edition made it out before 10:40am. So late, but your coffee would have still been warm, so in my book that's okay.

Over those seven years we have been off on tangents and got lost in the rabbit holes of the surf industry and we've had advertisers come and support us and come and go like the tides, but we have remained steadfast on our goal to shed light on all the good things that happen in the New Zealand culture of surfing. That is unique to us here in Aotearoa.

We're proud to have told the stories of the great surf artists and the musicians and the surf athletes young and old and the businesses striving to cut a new path within the culture. There are so many great people doing amazing things and we've been very priviledged to get to tell these stories in our 52 editions for each of those seven years.

Most of all it is our readers that keep us motivated and inspired, so thanks for a superb seven years of giving me an incredible excuse to visit the beach daily.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS This just landed on my desk – if you're looking for a front row seat to St Clair Point then this iconic house is definitely worth a nudge.
