February 20th 2018: Losing summer

So it seems the trouble with having an epic summer is that some day it's going to end. I'm not sure about you, but I felt a little anxiety about that this past week and so went into a frenzy of sorts to spend as much time as possible in the water.

I'm wearing the badges for it. Rashes in places that only a good summer can reach, aching back muscles, an addiction for the sweet smell of board wax and the aroma of sunscreen. This sunshine, warm water and lazy waves are going to be hard to let go.

There was one reminder of the normal transmission out of the Southern Ocean with a pulse in swell on Sunday. I made the decision to surf the first morning of the new swell and ended up regretting not taking the camera out to capture it. The long period pulse saw sets coming every 10-15 minutes with some beautiful barrels and energised throwing sections where the banks allowed. And then dead flat in between. It was a weird experience. Made weirder by the fact that it peaked at midday and was flat again by nightfall. Just like the forecast predicted (but I didn't quite believe). So, apologies, no gaping barrels in today's report, but lots of summer surf and sunshine in spades. Yep, I'm going to hold onto that for as long as I can.

In May I am heading across to the Gold Coast to speak at Lenscape – that's a professional photography conference being put on by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. They're basically taking over Sea World for the weekend – it's going to be pretty ground breaking. All professional photographers are invited and if you book your tickets before February 28 then you have a chance to win an AUD$2000 Sea World vacation. Here's how Lenscape's Earlybird Prize works. See you there ...

See you at the beach ... Derek
