I've been using Canon cameras since I first picked one up and pointed at a beach so the past few weeks have been quite a buzz as I've been testing the new A9 from Sony. This camera is somewhat of a gamechanger and has some features that caught Canon and Nikon napping.
It has a 24.2MP full-frame sensor, breathes fire, shoots at 20 frames per second and has some beautiful lenses to rival the best. I've been using it for Box of Light for a few weeks now (most of this week's edition was made by the Sony A9) and it is growing on me. Although it is the polar opposite of the Canons it is packed with features and the ability to customise nearly everything. The A9 can shoot completely silently, send images wirelessly to my phone and network and it has a huge dynamic range, which is jargon for the detail it captures in the shadows and highlights.
To be fair my first week with it felt like babysitting a stranger's dog, then my second week we found some common ground and by week three I could see a place in my kitbag for the A9. One thing is certain: Put some beautiful waves in front of the A9 and it brings them to life.

PS While surfing the beach at Raglan on Sunday I saw a young grom pulling into barrels on a little grindy left. Daniel Kereopa was giving him some instruction. The kid was ripping. Turns out he is Kora Cooper who lives in Raglan. He's 13 and just finished second in the Under 18s at the New Zealand Surfing Championships, held in Gisborne last week. And he won the Under 16s and he finished second in the Under 14s. Kora Cooper: make a mental note and you'll find his befreckled mug below.
