I love it this time of year when minestrone soup weather patterns keep throwing curve balls to keep the weather experts on the edges of their seats. And this past week that has meant a high trapped by a low on each side bringing calm winds and lots of clear days. It looks like summer, but, oh no, that unmistakable bite in the air definitely belongs to winter.
And then there's that low out to the east, just spinning off the coast in the South Pacific and barely moving anywhere – just generating a beautiful, beautiful east swell for us that will be into its fourth day today. And it looks set to keep producing for a few more days yet.
It was a bad week to be moving my gallery – lots of stories of swell and amazing sessions and yet here I was mostly staring at a paintbrush, quietly doing my best to transform the old Bike Otago bike shop into a nice, clean gallery space. It was a task I thought might take a few days at most. Try seven, and not one surf along the way. And I'm still not quite finished. But hopefully it will look a little more like a gallery by the end of this week. Come and check it out at 8 Castle Street, Dunedin – that's directly opposite the Dunedin Railway Station, which just happens to be New Zealand's most photographed building.
That calm patch of warmer weather played havoc with the skifields for a few days, but the guns are back on at Treble Cone and the green light is, oh, so close now. Plan your TC trip here.
See you at the beach (or up on the hill) ... Derek
