June 13th 2017: Winter hues

Winter is a great time to be a photographer in Dunedin. With the sun tracking so low in the sky the light is filtered through more of our atmosphere and that makes for lazy golden mornings and the beautifully contrasted hues of yellows against the blues of the ocean. It makes it hard to take a bad photo and on crisp mornings like the past few (not today, though ... oh, no) it's pretty exciting and hard not to be tempted into a cheeky mid-week surf.

Winter in Dunedin also sees the daylight hours chopped down from a whopping peak of 18 in summer to a slim 10 hours. That makes it a bit trickier to schedule all my commercial work, but forces me to rebalance and catch back up on the landslide of projects that await editing ... and I have a lot. I'm not really cut out for inside work, or office work, so I tend to procrastinate, duck, weave, shirk and actively run from the computer or keyboard, but the reality is my Macs are my dark room these days. So, for winter at least, I get more done. At least, that's the plan.

The only spanners in the works are the lure of the snow in the mountains (TC opens on June 22), those damn aurora (lookout for one on Friday/Saturday night) and the fact that these southerly storms just keep whipping that ocean into a big wave playground. Like right now ... have you seen the ocean today? You should see it tomorrow. Peaking around midday. I love winter.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS We're moving our gallery to a bigger and better space at 8 Castle Street, directly opposite the Dunedin Railway Station, on June 26 – that's two weeks from now. Until then you can still find us at the usual spot or browse from the comfort of your home right here.
