These are what most of us live for – moments when the elements come together. When nature plays a complete hand. When a group of people bond over some wildly scary reefbreak, snow-capped peak or playground of perfect peelers. They're moments that etch a space on the highest shelf of your brain and surface frequently. For some, they're the moments that define them.
I'm lucky in my job that I get to expereince lots of these. Here's my top moments from the past few years shooting Box of Light and sharing the stories of the people who make these adventures so much fun.
Not surprisingly Doug Young features in a few of these. He mainlines on that blurry edge between possible and impossible and does it all with a great big laugh. He's as close to primal as we'll get – a mostly wild, barely domesticated man, but that might just be what makes him such a great survivor.
Nearly all the standout sessions feature an element of that primal instinct – that ability to run to the edge and push on. I admire that. Others are simply great fun.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS It's 2017. Make some plans to detach from normality – get out and experience a wild corner of this beautiful country of ours. Make a few memorable sessions for yourself ...
