Well that was another year of craziness – a blur of good times and adventures and waves and laughter and some hazy, hazy bits glueing it altogether.
As responsibility started to weave its way into my life in my late 20s I remember complaining to a good friend of mine that it felt like I never reached a calm place in my work or life and that I always felt like I was battling in an undersized yacht in an overbearing storm. He smiled at me and told me: "that storm is not going anywhere. Instead of trying to sail to a calm place, just learn to sail in the storm".
That sage advice helped me normalise the curse of responsibility, but it doesn't mean I'm not envious of those who find a way to shirk it completely. Sailing in a storm does have some advantages – you become well equipped to take one on the bow and drop tools to chase waves. You also learn that nowhere is too far to go if you really want to be there. And being able to perform under pressure is actually a great skill for survival.
So, I'll embrace the storm and hope at least that in the eye of it all I can find a week or two of calm.
Thanks for coming on the Box of Light journey with us – some of you are into your sixth year with us now! We couldn't do this without you, so a huge thanks for being there alongside us. You rock and we wish you all the best for 2017.
See you at the beach ... Derek
