As much as Sydney rocks, it's the little coastal escapes north and south that add that extra bit of value to this city's lifestyle. For us, by a stroke of luck, that came in the form of a four-hour trip south to an old favourite: Pebbly Beach. Somehow we managed to find a shack right on the shoreline at one of Australia's most "Ocker" beaches.
Despite the intense electrical storm that raged throughout the night (and later ransacked Sydney), we didn't get any swell in the south (but believe me this coast is home to some truly hidden gems on its day). Instead we got crystal clear water, dolphins, perfect diving conditions and an abundance of wildlife right on our doorstep. From goanna trying to break into the shack, to king parrots, lyre birds, rosella, lorikeets and bower birds all intent on a personal introduction, this couldn't get any more Australian. We half expected to see George Gregan scratching around in the undergrowth muttering something about "four more years". Too soon?
The experience is made so much better by the fact the shacks have no electricity and no cellphone coverage. That's a rarity these days, but we highly recommend it. Nothing out classes the ryhthm of a rising and falling sun.

PS Huge congrats to Adriano De Souza the new World Champion on proving that hard work beats all in the 2015 World Surf League. Meanwhile Kelly Slater was building this. And condolences to Mick Fanning who lost a brother right before the finals day at Pipeline, Hawaii ... heavy. Thoughts are with ya mate.
