Traditionally this is the crazy season, so we can all expect a little madness. But I didn't really think through what two 18-month-long projects screeching to deadline would look like in amongst it all. According to my osteo, I'm not really cut out for a desk job. Editing images for six weeks, bent over a screen and staring at pixels for hours at a time is apparently bad for me. Back-breaking even. He suggested I try to surf at least once a day. Not bad advice. Unfortunately those deadlines had long tails and as the buoy and wind charts started pinging about the north swell all I could do was knuckle down, turn off my phone and avoid all my surfing friends.
Last week the north coast came to life spectacularly. You might expect to read about it all right here. But you won't. No, I was stuck in a small office massaging pixels. My only breath of fresh air came when I surfaced for one of the hottest, flattest, most summery evenings of the week at St Kilda Beach. It was like a lake it was that flat, but the beach was packed, the temperature was peaking around 27°C and boardshorts and bikinis were everywhere. That's a great day in Otepoti.
Late into the evening, with lots of swimmers lining the shallows, 9016 appeared looking for some fun. This stealthy sea lion wanted something to chase and it soon found it with a group of St Kilda lifeguards out enjoying a balmy evening swim. 9016 chased them right to the beach before sprinting back into the sea like a champion on a victory lap. Sea lions 1: humans 0. It's going to be a long summer. Get amongst it.
See you at the beach ... Derek
