November 17th 2015: Print is not dead

There is no doubt that we live more and more in a digital age. From the images in this Box of Light report to the advances in virtual reality our world is being reflected in pixels in many new and intriguing ways. I embrace that new technology like most of us, but there is still a place for real, tactile print. Nothing leaps off the page like the images in a great coffee-table book or well-framed piece of art in a prominent position in your home.

That's partly why we launched the Box of Light Gallery last week at 1 Dowlling St, Dunedin. As nice as the images look in this email you're only ever getting 580 pixels of them and at that size the detail is hard to see. But printed and framed it's a whole different story as the details emerge and add their own piece to the story. We use state-of-the-art Canon cameras to produce these each week – cameras designed to shoot advertising campaigns and billboards, and the images from them come to life when printed.

So if you're one of our long-term subscribers and are curious about what an analog version of Box of Light looks like then come down and visit the team at the Box of Light Gallery (we're open from 12-5 Wed-Fri and 11-4 Sat – or by apppointment). We have lots of prints on display starting from $49 and a few of our favourites framed and ready to brighten your home. Which is your favourite?

Big southwest swell filling in overnight on the South Coast for tomorrow and plenty of waves on the horizon.

See you at the beach ... Derek
