Sometimes the phone rings and the forecast for my week changes in an instant. This past week that came in the voice of surf photographer Jereme Aubertine, who runs Damaged Goods Zine out of Papamoa. He had photographer Jono Smit covering the story of Aussie rippers Beau Foster, Jack Lynch and Matt Crowe, as they worked with filmmaker Nathan Foster on a whirlwind tour of the South Island for global surf website Surf Stitch.
I was roped into shoot while Jono captured the nuptials of a couple in Oamaru. Not a bad gig considering Jerry usually deals with some pretty inspiring people.
And he didn't disappoint. From the super cruisy Jack Lynch – riding a 5-foot nothing twin-fin and boosting airs and burying rail on it in overhead waves, to the laidback Matt Crowe – a teacher by trade with a mean backhand, to Beau Foster – a new-school hipster with 33K followers on Insty and an air show to warrant it all. But their surfing prowess and their social status was overrun by the fact they were just bloody good blokes. Nate was in charge of orchestrating it all and he had that same energy and spirit as he soaked in the little bits in between the surfing – like the long walks in to a slightly onshore peak, the encounters with sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins and the ill-winds that swung on a pendulum.
