Just a few weeks ago snow was falling in Dunedin – hard to believe after this past few weeks of springtime sunshine. I was walking around in a daze in the weekend. St Clair was buzzing with people, the restaurants were packed and the Fish Hook had turned up with their cart – it was like a scene from a Sydney Beach. Of course a new swell meant most of the surfers were running around grinning wildly as well.
The warm, sunny weather spreads good vibes all around – summer is just around the corner – although the chilly 11°C water didn't deter plenty of brave swimmers this past weekend. The longer days open the window to that lifestyle we all crave after a few months of winter hibernation.
I've been travelling a bit lately – a little bit of time in the pacific islands and lots of trips into the North Island for some exciting projects. It's nice to be able to explore a few more beaches and adventure destinations, but it's also nice to come home to uncrowded waves and to have everything within a 10-minute drive. That's an easy thing to take for granted down here, but it really is pretty special.
Okay that's enough for your Tuesday coffee break. Check out the pictures below, check the surf forecast here and plan your own adventure one afternoon this week or this weekend.
See you at the beach ... Derek
PS South Coast Boardriders is holding its club opening day on September 27, 2014 starting at 3pm at the clubrooms at St Clair Beach (opposite the Esplanade Restaurant). Lots of fun things planned for the whole family with a really cool grommet programme shaping up.
