June 10th 2014: Crisp

How quickly has winter come around this year? I'm sure it was just yesterday I was planning a series of summer adventures and now I'm hibernating inside snuggled up to the fire. The trouble is this: outside the window of my house, the surf is still cranking.

We were lucky to stumble across a glassy session at Poles this weekend and it really illustrated the colourful characters of our surf culture. Richard Ayson was teaching his 13-year-old daughter to surf (and she rips) in the sucky lefts while JC Susan, Nick Rapley and Tom Bracegirdle punted off anything with a half-decent ramp on it. It was one of those sessions that drew a crowd – beautiful, glassy, blue waves and a handful of surfers going to town on them. I was inspired.

So it may be winter now and it may be crisp, but we're still the luckiest surfers on the planet.

Now I'm a real fan of sharks – they are pretty amazing creatures, but they do have a bad reputation and in parts of Australia they've been mercilessly culled. But it doesn't have to be that way – we can coexist on our coastlines. Shark Shield has just introduced a new surfing product that emits shark-repelling electric pulses through a board's fins. "Basically, every single board could be 'Shark Shield ready' and the product would simply be plugged in," explained a spokesman for Shark Shield.

Tom Carroll has got behind the company, which is offering an investment opportunity to interested parties. Sound like you? Click here to request a detailed Information Memorandum for the Shark Shield investment.

See you at the beach ... Derek

PS The All Blacks take on England this weekend at the Forsyth Barr Stadium – there are just a few tickets left so get in quick – if the opening game is anything to go by then this is going to be a monumental battle.
