March 4th 2014: Discovery

We often get asked by Box of Light readers "you always feature great waves can you let me know where I should go to surf tomorrow?" Since the start of this past year we've had a hidden forecast and live wind report lurking under the blue positive sign on our website – click on the icon below the sign up to check it out: www.boxoflight.com

We even started running a little prediction of the best coast to explore in our reports, but it was soon pointed out to us that a big part of surfing is the exploration. It's that build up of layer-upon-layer of experience with different swell directions, winds and tides that makes the difference between being on the pulse of a new swell and scrambling for scraps in a dying swell or being blown out by howling winds.

There are a bunch of easy gets on our North Coast and our South Coast, but push a little further and you start to find myriad opportunities within a few hours' drive of Dunedin. Even the Otago Peninsula alone is a surfing paradise, but the hard core locals at most of these spots are sea lions, seals and yellow-eyed penguins. Some are very rarely surfed and teem with marine life.

So next time you're fighting for a wall at St Clair Beach or in the pack chasing elusive peaks around Blackhead consider what might be happening at a remote beach just a few clicks away. Your adventures may not always end in success, but that's what discovery is about. Get out there and explore a little more.

See you at the beach ... Derek
