Welcome to the first edition of Dunedin Light – a new publishing project by Dunedin photographer Derek Morrison (that's me).
Every Tuesday, between 10am and 11:30am this photo-based report will be distributed for the enjoyment of locals throughout Dunedin city and to ex-pats and visitors throughout the world. People like you! (Tell your friends about Box of Light)
The images will showcase the Dunedin we all love and the places around the city we would probably rather be. It's a weekly dose of stoke anchored in the beach culture that makes the Dunedin lifestyle so great.
It's why I choose Dunedin as my home and the place to raise my family. I'm enamored by the ridiculously great surf, the world's coolest creatives, the vibrant student buzz, friendly people and the incredible Dunedin light.
Dunedin's ever-changing weather is one of the best things about living here – snow one day and week-long blue skies the next. And the surf ... the Dunedin coastline is the most wave-rich area in New Zealand. Our hope is that Dunedin Light can shed light on this part of our city for all to enjoy.
In this past week we have tracked a series of southerly squalls along the coast and searched for a hidden corner to shoot the surf. Everywhere we went we found people playing in the surf or on the beach. Not bad for the tail end of winter.
